What is Prometrium
Prometrium (Progesterone) is used to cause menstrual periods in women who have not yet reached menopause but are not having periods due to a lack of progesterone in the body. Chemical Name: Progesterone Micronized. Prometrium (Progesterone) is also used to prevent overgrowth in the lining of the uterus in postmenopausal women who are receiving estrogen hormone replacement therapy. It is a type of female hormone (progestin). This medication is similar to progesterone, which is naturally produced in your body, and it is prescribed to replace the hormone when your body does not produce enough of it. In women who are not pregnant or going through menopause, this drug is used to restore normal menstrual cycles that have stopped for several months (amenorrhea). Progesterone is also used as part of combined hormone replacement therapy with estrogens to reduce menopausal symptoms (such as hot flashes). Progesterone is added to estrogen replacement therapy to reduce the risk of developing uterine cancer.
Prometrium (Progesterone) should not be used to prevent heart disease or dementia, because this medication may actually increase your risk of developing these conditions.
How to use
Take this medicine orally, usually once a day before bedtime or as prescribed by your doctor. Read the patient information leaflet given by your pharmacist before you start using this medicine and every time you get a supplement. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. If you have trouble swallowing the tablets, take them standing up with a full glass of water. Follow the dosing schedule carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions. The dosage depends on your health condition and response to therapy. If you are a postmenopausal woman taking estrogen hormones and have not had a hysterectomy, your doctor may prescribe Prometrium to prevent endometrial hyperplasia. This is a condition in which the uterine mucosa becomes abnormally thick and can worsen or occur frequently if you take only estrogen without progesterone.
Usually in the second half of your menstrual cycle, progesterone causes the uterine mucosa (endometrium) to reject. However, if you are not ovulating, progesterone is not produced, so the mucous membrane remains and can continue to grow if you only take estrogen. To prevent this from happening, talk to your doctor about prescribing prometrium or total progesterone. The generic alternative is not made by the company making the brand name product. Prometrium can also be prescribed to treat primary and secondary amenorrhea. Primary amenorrhea is when a young woman has never started menstruating, and secondary amenorrhea is when a woman has stopped menstruating. It can be due to a gynecological condition, very underweight, serious illness, or the physical stress experienced by long-distance runners. Brand name or generic Prometrium is an oral medication that you should take according to your doctor's instructions. The amount of medicine you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the dose of Prometrium may depend on the health condition for which you are using the medicine.

This hormone is responsible for many functions, including preventing osteoporosis, protecting against cardiovascular disease by lowering blood pressure, and inhibiting cholesterol accumulation. Progestins are a synthetic version of progesterone and do not have the same benefits as prometrium as a bioidentical hormone. Even if you have had a partial or complete hysterectomy and can no longer get pregnant, your body will still benefit from taking progesterone.
